What can I do with an Infant?

Sometimes it’s hard when you are caring for a new baby to know exactly what to do to help them with their development. People often mistakenly think that all babies do is eat, sleep and cry. Infants are little explorers discovering the world for the first time. Chances are you are already doing the things you need to be doing to help them along with their journey. Here is a list of a few age appropriate activities for infants.

  • Talk, Talk,Talk- Talk to your baby. Start when they are still in the womb and don’t stop. The more words, inflections and voices they hear, the more they can learn about language and understanding.
  • Labeling- This goes along with talking. Labeling is the act of telling your baby what you are doing throughout the day. To some it feels silly and seems like you are talking to yourself, but this is how your children begin to comprehend language and learn what things are. For example, “I’m going to pick you up and we are going to change that smelly diaper. Let’s go get a fresh diaper. I’m going to put you on the changing table now.”
  • Read, Read, Read- This is so important. It not only helps to create a bond, but it helps develop language and early reading skills. The more you read, the more children will develop a love of reading. Experts recommend reading for at least 30 minutes a day, more if you can.
  • Sing- Even if you are not the next American Idol, singing to your baby is important. They love to hear your voice. Music is one of the best tools in working with babies and children. You can just make up songs on the spot and children will respond.
  • Move it!- Babies need to move. It is recommended that unless sleeping, infants who are not yet crawling do not remain in the same position for more than 30 minutes at a time. Tummy time, even for those who hate it, is the most important activity your baby can engage in. There are many “baby and me” activities where you can move with your baby. I like the book Itsy Bitsy Yoga by Helen Garabedian. It includes many physical movements you can do with your baby to develop all of their muscles.

If you would like more information about our early childhood options, please email ErinC@LakeshoreSF.com.
