Elbow Pain, Could the Shoulder be to Blame?
We see many people with lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow. Lateral epicondylitis is pain over the outside of the elbow where many of the forearm muscles attach. However, not just tennis players have tennis elbow. Anyone can develop it, and it is common in people who spend a lot of time at the computer or perform lots of gripping during their day.
Many people who come to us for lateral epicondylitis have unsuccessfully tried exercises on their own that focus on the wrist and elbow, but it is important to look at the whole arm. Most specifically, the muscles that control shoulder blade position should be considered, such as the lower trapezius and serratus anterior. These muscles are crucial when treating the elbow as the position of the whole arm is determined by the orientation of the shoulder blade.
For exercises to perform, look at Lakeshore Physical Therapy’s blog post on tennis elbow: http://lakeshore-pt.blogspot.com or click on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lakeshorephysicaltherapy/
Why Core Matters?
The musculature of your core, in a sense, is what connects your lower and upper body. Every step or motion you make essentially moves through your core or originates from it, whether it be picking up your child off the floor or swinging your racket at a tennis ball. Thus, a weak or strong core can affect the way you feel, move, or function.
Try these Core strengthening exercises for yourself!
- Plank Variations
- Reverse Crunches
- Bicycles: Seated or Lying
