Working out can be a pretty solitary activity for some individuals. Others, on the other hand, might require a little more of a structured framework to succeed. Finding a habit or approach that works for you is the key. If you prefer group exercise, our Chicago workout classes offer lots of health benefits.
Now this might seem like an obvious benefit, but still an important one. If you’re looking to lose weight, achieving a caloric deficit is much easier through physical activity (along with a proper diet). The average person can burn as much as 500 calories or more in a workout class. Every body type is different and therefore may burn more or less. You also have to take into account the intensity of the class. Some classes have more cardio, whereas others may focus on strength.
Speaking of focusing on strength, the next added benefit of Chicago workout classes is to build muscle! While some classes are a comprehensive full-body workout, others concentrate on boosting the strength of particular muscle groups. Cycling class, for instance, only focuses on the legs, while classes like Body Formula mixes upper and lower body exercises.
If you’re an outgoing person, you probably look for social engagement on a regular basis. While you don’t need to be an extrovert to take Chicago workout classes, it does offer the added benefit of social connection. Humans are sociable creatures by nature, and this has several benefits for our mental health. Social interaction “not only staves off feelings of loneliness, but also it helps sharpen memory and cognitive skills, increases your sense of happiness and well-being, and may even help you live longer,” according to research from the Mayo Clinic. So if you’re in need of a mental health boost, come hang out with your friends at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness!
Research shows that regular exercise may help lower your mortality. According to a study conducted by Harvard and other international universities, exercising 2-4 times more than what is advised by the US Department of Health & Human Services may reduce mortality. The study concluded that to achieve the maximum association with lower mortality, you would need to perform:
- 150 to 300 minutes of vigorous physical activity a week (between 21 and 43 minutes a day) OR
- 300 to 600 minutes of moderate physical activity a week (between 43 and 86 minutes a day) OR
- An equivalent combination of both
Results showed that those who engaged in 300 to 600 minutes, or 5 to 10 hours, of moderate physical activity per week experienced a reduction in all-cause mortality of 26% to 31%. That’s just one 45-minute workout class a day!
Structured Exercise Routine
As we pointed out in a previous blog, sometimes it can be difficult to find time for exercise with a busy schedule. Workout classes make it a little bit easier to block off some time, given that they’re scheduled in advance. Not only that, but the instructor comes to class with a planned workout ready to go. Some people thrive through structure, and prefer that they can come to class and follow along rather than determine what exercises to do themselves like in the fitness center. This is especially advantageous for newcomers. The gym can sometimes be intimidating, and workout classes are a great way to get started.
