30 Day of Gratitude – Explore a Theme of Thankfulness this November
This November our entire yoga department will join forces to help you develop a practice of gratitude on and off your mat. Each class all month you will be provided the opportunity to write down one specific thing you are grateful for on a small card that is personal and powerful to you. You can keep this card at the top of your mat (or hidden underneath – no one else needs to know what it says) so that it becomes part of your intention in your yoga practice, fills your moving meditation with a new sense of purpose, and keeps you grounded in gratitude and contentment. By the end of the month you will have a whole collection of gratitude cards to reflect upon and remind yourself just how much you have to be thankful for in life.

Freestyle It!

The shoulder joint is one of the most complex and vulnerable joints in the body, as it sacrifices stability for range of motion. The freestyle stroke utilizes a wide range of motion and therefore, normal muscle firing sequence is imperative for pain-free swimming.  Freestyle can be broken down into 3 phases: hand entry/reach, pull through, and recovery. Each of these phases requires high demand and activity from multiple muscles at different times. Colwin et al (Breakthrough Swimming. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics; 2002) utilized EMG analysis to measure muscle activity throughout the freestyle stroke. These muscles were the most active in their respective stages:

So why is this important?  Due to the repetitive nature of swimming, it can place stress on the shoulder girdle musculature and glenohumeral joint. Pain or difficulty performing freestyle can be tied to weakness or poor endurance in the muscles utilized during the corresponding phase. Adding scapular and shoulder strengthening into your program can prevent injury and improve stroke biomechanics.

Whether you are new to the sport, looking for pointers for your technique, or addressing shoulder weakness, the staff at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness is here for you.  LSF professional swim instructors can be reached at:
